Out in Yamhill County this month, the vines are just beginning to wake up, the hills are still that deep, saturated (quite literally, as I write this) green. And over in Portland, the city is shaking off winter with festivals, live music, and the kind of buzzing energy that reminds you why people fall in love with this place. Whether you’re rooted in wine country, planted in the city, or somewhere happily in between, this month has something for everyone : world-class jazz, springtime tulip fields, community celebrations, and a little bit of good old Oregon history. Let’s get into it!

Secrets of the Past: Allis-Chalmers Tractor Talk — March 12
When: 6:00 PM, March 12, 2026
Where: Yamhill Valley Heritage Center, 11275 SW Durham Lane, McMinnville

Okay, hear us out, this one is genuinely fascinating. As part of the museum's annual 'Secrets of the Past' series, a deep-dive discussion on the history of Allis-Chalmers tractors is coming to the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center. Founded in the 19th century, the company grew into one of the world's most recognized agricultural equipment manufacturers, famous for those brilliant orange machines you still spot rusting beautifully in farm fields across the county. It's Oregon history you can touch, and the kind of local knowledge-keeping that makes this community so rich.

The Great Egg Hunt — Downtown Newberg

When: March 29- April 5
Where: Downtown Newberg
Spring is officially here when downtown Newberg fills up with kids (and adults who are definitely just there to supervise) hunting for Easter eggs. This beloved community tradition turns the heart of Newberg into a festival scene, with local businesses participating and families filling the streets. It's the kind of thing that reminds you why small-town Oregon living is so genuinely good.

Portland & Beyond
Biamp Portland Jazz Festival
When: March 5-14

Headliner: Mavis Staples (March 14)
If you haven't made it into the city for the Portland Jazz Festival yet, you still have time and the lineup is worth the drive. St. Vincent kicked off the festival at the Schnitzer with what Portland Monthly called a 'jazz club cabaret fever dream,' which honestly sounds like exactly the kind of show this city was made for. Closing out the festival on March 14, Mavis Staples performs at Revolution Hall alongside the 2026 Portland Jazz Master Shirley Nanette — a night that's sure to be something extraordinary. Even if big-ticket shows aren't your thing, much of the festival spills into free outdoor performances, neighborhood venues, and cultural spaces throughout the city.

St. Patrick's Day in Portland
When: March 17, 2026
Portland knows how to do St. Patrick's Day, and McMenamins leads the charge with Irish dancers, live music, and themed food and drink specials across their beloved properties: Edgefield, Kennedy School, Hotel Oregon in McMinnville (yes, right here in the valley!), and more. Whether you're catching the parade downtown or settling into a cozy pub booth with a proper pint, March 17 is a full day of community and celebration. The Flanagan's Wake interactive comedy show at Experience Theatre Project is another wildly fun option if you want something truly memorable.

March Madness at Moda Center
When: March 19–21, 2026
Where: Moda Center, Portland
Portland is hosting early-round NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games at Moda Center this March, bringing college basketball's most electric atmosphere right to our doorstep. Even if your team isn't in it, the energy at Moda for March Madness is unlike anything else, and you can always pair it with a Trail Blazers home game while you're in the arena mood. The Blazers have seven home games this month as the playoff picture comes into focus.

Portland Cherry Blossoms — Mid-March
Not to be outdone, the Portland Cherry Blossoms also offer some of the best photo ops in the state, and they are in bloom from mid-March to early April, typically lasting just 3 weeks. These stunning trees, primarily located around the Eastbank Esplanade and the Portland Japanese Garden, create a breathtaking spectacle of pink and white flowers that attract photographers, nature lovers, and visitors from all over.
Cherry Blossom Viewing Locations
Eastbank Esplanade: A scenic waterfront path perfect for a leisurely stroll while enjoying the cherry blossoms.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park: A vibrant park that hosts various events during the bloom season, making it a lively spot for visitors.
Best Times for Photography
The peak bloom period is typically around the last week of March to the first week of April, making this the ideal time for photography enthusiasts to capture the blossoms in their full glory. Early morning or late afternoon provides the best lighting conditions for stunning photos.
Events and Activities
During the cherry blossom season, various festivals and events are organized, including cultural performances, art displays, and community gatherings. These events celebrate the beauty of the blossoms and the cultural significance they hold.
Be sure to visit Portland during this enchanting season to experience the beauty and joy that the cherry blossoms bring to the city!
March Weather: Embrace the Drama

March in the Willamette Valley is famously unpredictable, you might get sunshine and 60°F one afternoon and wake up to frost the next morning. Our advice? Keep a rain jacket in the car, plan outdoor events with some flexibility, and enjoy the cloudy days as well as the sunny ones. Seriously, Columbia Gorge and the coastal range are absolutely stunning right now when water is rushing everywhere. It's messy, it's beautiful, and it's very, very Oregon.
Your Community Connection
If all these events have you feeling grateful to live somewhere this vibrant, we feel that every single day. From the vineyard roads of Yamhill County to the lit-up streets of Portland, this region has an energy that just keeps giving.
And if you're thinking about finding your own corner of it whether that's a farmhouse with valley views, a walkable home near downtown Newberg, or something in between, we'd love to talk. The McCreith Team knows these neighborhoods the way only people who actually live here can.
